“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the
compassionate actions of its members.”~Coretta Scott King
In May 2016 House of Refuge sustained a massive financial blow. But, we reached out and let our community know that we needed help. You wrote letters, you donated items, you prayed for us; you supported our program financially because you said, ”The future of our families matter to this community.”
Here we are, May 2018. Not only have we survived with YOUR help, we have moved homeless families back into safe, dignified homes. We have been able to replace 75% of our aging sewer systems making our homes sustainable for the future. Despite the upheaval we have continued to provide the same excellent service to our residents and continue to provide outcomes such as an 85% success rate of moving families from homelessness to permanent housing within 12 months.
If that is not enough, yesterday we held a Ribbon Cutting ceremony that adds an Employment and Education Center (EEC) to help adults attain an on-line vocation certificate. Once the certification program is completed we are working with local businesses to secure employment that will increase their earning potential making them truly sustainable. The EEC will also serve as a Center that offers one nutritional meal a day to children during school breaks when free school meals are no longer available. (more about that next month!)
If Coretta Scott King could see this community I am sure she would agree that our East Valley is great because of YOU and all YOU do to assist our families regain their futures. I am so proud to call you my friends and neighbors and spend many of my waking hours bragging on YOU and the compassion you have shown. You truly have proven you are a GREAT community. Thank YOU!
Sincerely, Nancy Marion, Executive Director
