Legacy Planning

Legacy Planning

By including House of Refuge in your planned giving, you can ensure that your passion and commitment to our mission live on for future generations. Your thoughtful planning today will make a significant difference tomorrow, helping us to continue our vital work and expand our reach.

Join us in building a brighter future – speak with your estate planner or financial advisor about how you can leave a meaningful legacy with House of Refuge. Together, we can create a lasting impact.

There are several reasons to consider a bequest:

A bequest allows you to make a lasting impact on a cause you care about, ensuring your values and commitments endure beyond your lifetime.

Bequests can provide significant tax advantages for your estate, potentially reducing estate taxes and ensuring more of your assets go to the people and causes you care about.

Your bequest can help ensure that the nonprofit can continue its mission and make a difference for future generations, extending the reach of your generosity.

Ensure Your Legacy

If you are considering making a bequest for a restricted purpose, please contact us in advance. With the help of an advisor, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift be made to House of Refuge as part of your estate plan.

If you have named House of Refuge in your estate plan, please let us know so we can honor you and make sure that your intentions for its use will be followed.

Be sure to consult your legal or financial advisor to determine which gift and tax planning strategies best suit your needs.

Ways to Give

Will or Trust

Leaving a gift in your will or trust is a wonderful expression of your personal values. You can leave a percentage of your estate, a specific amount, a portion or all of an asset, or the remainder once all other provisions are met.

Donor Advised Funds (DAF)

A personal giving fund or DAF is the fastest-growing charitable giving vehicle; it may be just what you’re looking for. It’s a simple way to donate cash, real estate, stocks, mutual funds, or commodities and allows you the flexibility to distribute gifts over time, leaving a lasting legacy.

Give from Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)
If you are 70 1/2 years old or older, the IRS requires you to start withdrawing from most types of tax-advantaged retirement accounts. You must also take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from retirement accounts you inherit. For most people, the deadline for taking an RMD is December 31. If you miss the deadline or take less than you’re supposed to, you could be subject to a tax penalty.

To avoid this penalty, you can donate your RMD to House of Refuge. Qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) won’t be added to your taxable income for the year, potentially saving you money in taxes.

Learn more about RMDs and charitable donations here.

If you want to direct a portion of your RMD as a charitable donation to House of Refuge, tell your financial advisor/IRA custodian, or email info@houseofrefuge.org.

House of Refuge’s tax ID is 86-0662244. Distributions can also be mailed to:

Gift from an IRA
A gift from an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) is a method of charitable giving that allows individuals to donate directly from their retirement savings. This type of donation is often referred to as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A donor of age 70 ½ years of age or older may make a yearly transfer directly from an IRA to a qualified charity.

A gift from an IRA is a powerful tool that can help you support causes you care about while also providing potential tax benefits. It’s a strategic way to make a meaningful contribution during your lifetime. Email info@houseofrefuge.org for more information.

Gift of Stock
A gift of stock involves transferring shares of stock directly to a charitable organization instead of making a cash donation. This method of giving can offer significant tax benefits and is a straightforward process.

The benefits of this type of gift include:

  • When you donate appreciated stock that you’ve held for more than one year, you can avoid paying capital gains tax on the increase in value. This can result in a larger donation to the charity and a bigger tax deduction for you.
  • By donating stock directly, both you and the charity can benefit from the full value of the asset without the tax burden, potentially making your donation more impactful.
  • Donating stock can simplify your giving, especially if you hold a diverse portfolio of appreciated assets. It can also be an efficient way to donate significant sums without affecting your cash flow.

Please email info@houseofrefuge.org for House of Refuge brokerage account details for this type of donation.

Gift of Life Insurance

A gift of life insurance is a strategic way to support a charitable organization, offering the potential for substantial future impact while providing you with immediate and ongoing tax benefits. It’s a meaningful way to contribute to House of Refuge, often allowing you to give more than you might be able to through other means.

Speak with your financial advisor or insurance agent regarding this type of planned giving. Email  info@houseofrefuge.org for necessary documentation.

Gift of Real Estate
A gift of real estate is a powerful way to support House of Refuge, offering significant tax benefits while making a substantial impact. It’s a strategic form of giving that can help you achieve your philanthropic goals and provide valuable support to our mission. A gift of real estate involves donating property – such as a home, vacation property, commercial building, undeveloped land, or other types of real estate.

Please email  info@houseofrefuge.org for specific procedures and requirements for accepting property.
