Mesa, AZ – Anticipation and excitement are in the air! Water droplets on the rich soil glisten in the bright sunlight, the sweet smell of fresh herbs perfumes the breeze, and sprouting seeds hiding in planter boxes and neatly tilled rows are poised to send forth the first hints of the bounty that is to come. It’s Spring gardening season!
The Community Garden at the House of Refuge, Inc., campus has been a hub of activity for the past few weekends. The agency gratefully accepted the offer of help from the Advanced Autism Center for Treatment (AACT) to bring the plot back to life after having lain dormant during the pandemic. AACT donated supplies, equipment, seeds, and more than 80 hours of staff hands-on labor to give House of Refuge residents the opportunity to experience the relaxation of gardening and the thrill of eating delicious fruits and vegetables they will nurture and harvest themselves.
Danon and Cori Law, the founders of AACT Arizona, say they have been “fortunate beyond their wildest dreams” in terms of the amount of help and support they received in their quest to assist families facing the challenges of autism. They feel a strong desire to “find ways to give back to those in our community that are in need.”
AACT has been a very generous supporter of House of Refuge in the past year and the partnership seems natural not only because of their nearby location, but also because of their mutual concern for families dealing with autism. Both the Advanced Autism Center for Treatment and House of Refuge are committed to ensure that ALL citizens in our community are treated with equality, dignity, and respect. In addition to nutritious fresh produce, understanding and good will are growing through this shared labor of love.
