House of Refuge, Inc. named Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce 2020 Business of the Year

First time nonprofit earns award

MESA, AZ–House of Refuge, Inc. was named “Business of the Year” during the 11th annual Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce 2020 Business Awards Ceremony and the first non-profit to win the prestigious award. The annual event highlights and recognizes businesses and individuals that make a difference in the Queen Creek community, nominated by Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce members. Due to the pandemic, the awards ceremony was held virtually via YouTube. Other awards presented during the ceremony included Emerging Business of the Year, Educator of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

“We were absolutely delighted to be a nominee for this prestigious award but when we saw that we won ‘Business of the Year,’ we were all in a state of shock! To say we’re thrilled would be an understatement,” said House of Refuge Executive Director Nancy Marion.

House of Refuge is a non-profit organization that provides transitional housing and wrap-around support services to families experiencing homelessness in Arizona. Over its 24 year history, the organization has helped over 8,000 individuals by providing a home and the necessary support services to help the families transition to sustainable housing. In January 2020, House of Refuge signed an interest exchange agreement with Community Housing Partnership and acquired 115 affordable housing units in Phoenix that it maintains and rents to low-income individuals. In May 2020, House of Refuge expanded its programming by offering a drive-thru public food distribution in response to the rise in food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, the public food distribution has passed out over 6,500 food boxes.

“We are honored to serve Arizona families and are so proud to be part of this thriving East Valley community,” Marion said. “We simply could not fulfill our mission to serve homeless families if it weren’t for the incredible business community we have right here in Queen Creek and the entire East Valley. We are humbled each and every day by this community’s generosity. Thank you for this recognition.”
