Mesa Leadership Program Revamps Outdoor Space for Homeless Kids
April 1, 2023

Mesa, AZ – House of Refuge is thrilled to announce a Mesa Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for a newly upgraded play area for children recovering from homelessness. The public is invited to join the festivities to be held at 3:30 pm Wednesday, April 19, outside the House of Refuge Community Center located at 6909 E Ursula #1 Mesa.

The fresh paint, upgraded basketball court, cheerful flowers, new sports equipment, and bright turf are the work of the graduating class of the 2022‐23 Mesa Leadership Training and Development Program. The mission of the program is to “develop, educate, and… inspire individuals to become community leaders who will shape the future of the City of Mesa.”

In addition to 10 months of coursework, in‐depth experiences with vital City of Mesa services, and behind-the-scenes introductions to prominent local businesses, each class is responsible for a capstone service project. The children living in House of Refuge’s housing program for homeless families were chosen as this year’s beneficiaries of the Leadership Programs’ research, planning, fundraising, and hands‐on efforts.

Mesa Leadership participant, Stephanie Madden, summed it up well, “We are so happy with the new outside space for the kids to have a chance to enjoy nature and community under the shade of a tree!”
